Don't Pause The Music: The Importance Of Music In Our Lives

Don't Pause The Music The Importance Of Music In Our Lives By: Nicholas Rust If I were to ask you what your favorite song is right now, you would probably start playing all of your favorite songs in your head before you answered that question. I would also be willing to bet that there is a solid reason for that song being your favorite. Perhaps that song is linked to a very important aspect of your life. It could just be a song that you grew up with that makes you feel nostalgic. Maybe you just love the melody in it and it makes you feel good inside. No matter what backgrounds we all come from, music is a universal language that we all share. It's very rare to meet someone with no interest or taste in music these days.  Music has been around for millennia, and while its true origin cannot be traced, historians are willing to put a lot of their money on music being around as long as mankind itself. It's more than just a collection of sounds and beats that get stuc...

What if Monsters Lived?

What if the Slender Man were real? How would you even know? According to the myths and legends, he stalks his prey and drives them insane, but we know he is not real. He started out as an internet meme online. He is so popular because he is not real, and we know that supernatural monsters like him don't exist. Right? What about the infamous Slender Man stabbing of 2014 where two young girls stabbed a classmate to impress the Slender Man? I mean there is a documentary and everything. Slender Man, Pennywise the Clown, Bigfoot, the Sheepsquatch of West Virginia (look him up). Why do people obsess over them? As a personal fan of the Slender Man himself (no I do not think he is real, nor do I want him to be real), let me explain why he interests me. He just does. That's it? Well it's true. He looks just like a human, you know a 7-13 foot tall human, with really long arms, tentacles, no face, stalks people, and has the supernatural ability to short out technology and sprea...

From Mad to Sad: A Perspective Change

Sitting in traffic...there, I have successfully put a bad thought in your head. If you like traffic, good for you. You have successfully turned a mostly negative situation into something fun, but for most of us, traffic is frustrating. You're stuck in your car, not moving at all, surrounded on all sides, with only the radio to distract you from realizing that you're going to miss the miss the season finale of The Bachelor. Not seeing whats up front causing the traffic can be the most rage inducing part though, because you would need the senses of Superman himself to figure out how long you'll be sitting there. Sitting in traffic is hard for an impatient person like me, as the other night I was in it for quite a while. I sat there cursing like a pirate in my sinking ship for 30 minutes before turning the sail around to take a longer alternate route back to the uncharted island I call home. Only then did I realize how lucky I should consider myself to be to deal with the t...

Why do we collect things?

Image
Why do we collect things? We find something we like and are passionate about, and collect as many things related to passion to keep for ourselves. But what do we do with them. Do we play with our highly collectable Star Wars action figures, or keep them safe and clean in their plastic packaging because it makes them valuable? Do we hang up a Green Day poster in our room because we are an actual Green Day fan, or is it just to complete the aesthetic? What about Vinyl Records? Those are becoming popular again with some youth, but why? Vinyl records have become obsolete with CD's, IPod's, and now our the aux chord. Anything can be collectable for any reason, but one reason is always different from another. As humans we feel the need to attach ourselves to something, that is just how we are. An addiction is the wrong thing to be attached to, and following your favorite sports team or politician just seems to lead to controversy nowadays. But why a collection? Maybe it is t...

What Would You Say?

Image
What would you say? What would you say if you had to tell a large crowd of people how to make the most of life? What would you say if you had to motivate a crowd to go out into the world and make it a better place? What would you say to close out the most fulfilling time of your life? Would you be sentiment, funny, hopeful? Maybe you have that feeling where you have so many ways to say something about how you feel, and yet you'll never be able to put it into words. This is a feeling that I experience every year, and I do believe a little backstory is needed to put this into perspective. So if you want to get into some deep thoughts, bear with me.  For the past nine years I have attended 4-H Camp (yes the classic and ever so cliche summer camp). One may glimpse over summer camp as a place where the all you did was swim in the lake, sing cheesy songs, and complain about how the mean, old lunch lady never gave you enough mini corndogs (that last one I did a lot). But ...
