Don't Pause The Music

The Importance Of Music In Our Lives

By: Nicholas Rust

If I were to ask you what your favorite song is right now, you would probably start playing all of your favorite songs in your head before you answered that question. I would also be willing to bet that there is a solid reason for that song being your favorite. Perhaps that song is linked to a very important aspect of your life. It could just be a song that you grew up with that makes you feel nostalgic. Maybe you just love the melody in it and it makes you feel good inside. No matter what backgrounds we all come from, music is a universal language that we all share. It's very rare to meet someone with no interest or taste in music these days.

Music has been around for millennia, and while its true origin cannot be traced, historians are willing to put a lot of their money on music being around as long as mankind itself. It's more than just a collection of sounds and beats that get stuck in our heads. The actual dictionary definition for music defines it as "vocal and/or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion." Whether it's playing a musical instrument or listening to a popular band, many people find music to be a powerful way of expressing themselves.

Music isn't just for us to keep for ourselves either. It's something that connects us all and brings us together. People bond over the songs that they like and the bands that they listen to. When we go to concerts and music festivals, we are sharing an awesome experience that is uniting us with the rest of the audience and even the musicians. All of the sudden, we are a part of something that is bigger than us. Bringing people together through music is unique because it gives us something that is truly sentimental to bond over.

Aside from sharing it with others, music is something that can greatly help our personal health and growth as humans. We will often times just think about how music is simply just for fun or expressing our emotions, but there is really so much more. It is important for our development as humans. Music has been scientifically proven to enhance brain functioning. Lots of people listen to music while working out because it motivates them and helps produce endorphins. Others listen to music while they work because it helps to keep them focused. Music also gives us a creative outlet, which is especially important for children. Everyone needs some sort of outlet to express creativity, and as an art medium, music is an excellent way of doing that. It can even help develop creativity in us while enhancing our listening and understanding skills. The way that it improves these skills is it challenges us to listen to the music and the lyrics to try and understand the meaning of it all. As we grow older, we challenge this concept more and mature as we listen to music and try to understand how it works.

On a more emotional level, music also affects us on an even deeper level. Studies have shown that music can be an effective way to help fight depression. While it's no cure, it helps to put people in better moods while lower stress levels in the human body while reducing anxiety. Listening to music can help put people in happier moods in general. Even listening to sad songs while in a more crestfallen mood can help people cope with their emotions more as listeners find pleasure and comfort in it.

Over the years, we have seen music evolve in many ways. Many different genres have emerged, concerts are performed in new and exciting ways, and we are always finding new ways to enjoy music. For some people, music is as simple as making a playlist on Spotify. For others, it's learning how to perform the most complex guitar riffs a person can master. Music has been used for fun, and it has been used for therapy. It means something different to every person, and yet there will always be one constant with it. Music will always be around.
